How will the leading European tech country Finland and its bustling Startup scene know what’s going on in the San Francisco bay area? That is what I will be busy conveying, in my new role as correspondent for Kauppalehti. As far as I know, as the one and only correspondent for a Finnish media in Silicon Valley from Finland.

About time too as Finland has a special interest in Silicon Valley. When it comes to the league of the Startups, Finland carries the Nordic trophy cup with more Startups than from all the other Nordic countries together: Sweden, Denmark and Norway.

As for the future: the Finnish young entrepreneurs are up and coming. The Startup Sauna and Aaltoes student organisations have created an initiative unique to Northern Europe with Slush as the main yearly event and a bustling flow of students between Finland and Silicon Valley.

What it takes to succeed in Silicon Valley is of increasing interest to the Finnish companies and readership of Finnish media. This is where it is all happening from the Google and Amazon same-day delivery wars to the Lyft and Uber transport revolution. It is where visionaries gather and many of the greatest innovations of our time are being created.

News. Digital economy and marketing. Companies, Startups and leadership. Visionaries, achievers and innovators. These are the subjects I will especially keep my eye on and will always appreciate news tips on.

The quirkiest part of my new task is the time difference of 10 hours. When it is office hours in Finland, that is when I sleep. Finland on the other hand sleeps during the San Francisco day. At 10 pm in San Francisco it is 8 am following day in Finland. As I yawn and stretch in my San Francisco morning at 8 am, it is already 6 pm in Finland.

We here in San Francisco always get the last word. Or is it the first word?

Kirjeenvaihtaja esittäytyy!

Piilaakson uusi ja tietääkseni ainoa suomalaiskirjeenvaihtaja avaa tänään kanavan Suomeen ja Kauppalehteen.

Olihan jo aika! Suomella on erityinen kiinnostus Piilaaksoon. Startup-mestaruuskisoissa suomalaiset johtavat kirkkaasti naapurimaita Ruotsia, Norjaa ja Tanskaa. Täällä on enemmän suomalaisfirmoja kuin naapureista yhteensä.

Uusia tulevaisuuden toivoja leivotaan StartupSaunassa ja Slushissa. On suuri ilo laittaa lisää pökköä pesään ja viestiä täältä länsirannikolta, millä eväillä Piilaaksossa menestytään.

Täällä se kaikki tapahtuu, tänne visionäärit kokoontuvat ja uusia palveluita testataan jatkuvasti katukuvassa. Aiheet eivät tule loppumaan kesken.

Uutiset. Digitaalinen talous ja markkinointi. Yritykset, startupit ja johtaminen. Visionäärit, innovaattorit ja tuloksentekijät. Erityisesti näitä aiheita tulen seuraamaan tarkalla silmällä. Minuun saa aina mieluusti olla yhteydessä ja uutisvinkit ovat lämpimästi tervetulleita!

Erikoisin osa työtäni taitaa olla aikaero. San Franciscossa nukutaan koko Suomen toimistotyöaika ja risat eli klo 8-18.
